Description of Work Unit

As a member of the CSFS Communications and Communities Division, this position works collaboratively with CSFS staff across the state to provide communications tools that engage and educate the residents of Colorado about forests, and supports the communications needs of CSFS forestry professionals.

Position Summary

The Graphic Design and Publications Specialist is responsible for developing, designing and creating graphics and publications for the Colorado State Forest Service ( CSFS ) that educate and inform diverse audiences about sound forest management, wildfire mitigation and the importance of trees and forests. Under the direction of the Communications Manager, this position meets the day-to-day graphic design needs of the agency and oversees the development, layout and distribution of publications. The Graphic Design and Publications Specialist manages use of the CSFS logo and helps to maintain the integrity of the CSFS brand. This position is also responsible for the development and design of promotional items and signs, and coordinates other projects as assigned.

This position operates out of the State Office of the CSFS in Fort Collins, Colorado, with the potential for flexible work arrangements, including remote work. Candidates interested in remote options must be able to travel to Fort Collins, the Denver area and/or other locations throughout Colorado periodically for staff meetings, etc.

Required Job Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree or higher in graphic design, journalism, fine arts, communications, marketing or similar degree

Demonstrated ability to distill complex information to create a variety of graphics and illustrations for print and digital formats

A strong command of design principles and effective visual communication for a variety of audiences and communication tools

Experience with Adobe Creative Suite apps (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, etc.) and Microsoft Office

Preferred Job Qualifications

At least three years of experience in graphic design, publications, journalism and/or communications

Experience with laying out publications, such as reports, brochures, guides, fact sheets and more

Demonstrated experience creating infographics, flyers, posters, logos, promotional items, building signs, interpretive signs, advertisements and more

Ability to create illustrations from conceptual ideas
